Chapter 11, Problem 2P
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The term “haploid” is normally used to describe archaeal and bacterial genomes, but some bacterial genomes have more than one chromosome in the genome, and some archaeal cells possess extra copy of the chromosome. Under such conditions, whether the term “haploid” disputes or not, with the presence of multiple copies of chromosome in archaeal genomes or bacterial genomes.

Introduction:

The structure that holds the genetic material inside a cell is termed as chromosome. Within a bacterial cell, the nucleoid region is present, which contains highly condensed chromosomes. Most of the prokaryotes possess a circular chromosome while some species of prokaryotes possess a linear chromosome. The length of a normal chromosome is around few million bp (base pair), e.g., the length of chromosomes in E.coli is around 4.6 million base pairs. The size of chromosomes of archaea differs over and above a tenfold range. Archaea are haploids and similar to bacteria possess a genome usually containing a single chromosome that is commonly circular.

Rickettsia bacteria always lives as parasites inside eukaryotic cells, ad their genomes are much smaller then those of free living bacteria. Organisms that live only as parasites often have reduced genomes compared to the free living relatives. How could a parasitic lyfestyle contribute to a reduction in genome size?
Genetically speaking, prokaryotes are different from eukaryotes because: a. prokaryotes usually have one main circular chromosome, whereas eukaryotes have multiple linear chromosomes prokaryotes do not usually have histone proteins to package their DNA prokaryotes do not have a nucleus to house their DNA as eukaryotes do prokaryotes have less total DNA than do eukaryotes All of the above
8) The diagram below represents a yeast cell that is in the process of budding, a form of asexual reproduction. Nucleus -Bud "Nucleus Which of the following statements describes the outcome of this process? A) The two cells that result will each contain half the species number of chromosomes. B) The two cells that result will have identical DNA. C) The bud will develop into a zygote. D) The bud will start to divide by the process of meiotic cell division.
