The product of the reaction in Fig. 11.56 is to be predicted.

Concept introduction:

A diol undergoes intramolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction in acidic medium and results in cyclic ether. In this reaction, one hydroxyl group gets protonated in acidic medium and the lone pair on the oxygen of other hydroxyl group acts as a nucleophile and attacks the protonated hydroxyl group, resulting in the formation of cyclic ether.
