Explanation Structure (b): In a given alkene, if the carbon atom is bonded to different groups means, it is said that cis-trans isomerism is possible. The structure (b) contains different groups bonded to the carbon atoms attached by the double bond. Therefore, cis-trans isomers are possible. If the same groups are present on the same side of the double bond then it is known as cis isomer. Trans isomer is the one that has the same groups on opposite side of the double bond. In this case, the hydrogen atoms can be present on same side or opposite side of the double bond. Name of cis isomer: Longest carbon chain is four carbon atoms. Hence, the parent alkane is butane. As there is a double bond, the parent alkene is butane. Double bond is present between carbon-2 and carbon-3. Hence, the position of double bond is indicated as 2-butene. As the hydrogen atoms are on same side of the double bond, it is said to be in cis configuration. Therefore, the name of cis isomer is cis-2-butene. Name of trans isomer: Longest carbon chain is four carbon atoms. Hence, the parent alkane is butane. As there is a double bond, the parent alkene is butane.
