Chapter 11, Problem 11.4.2P
A cantilever aluminum column has a square tube cross section with an outer dimension of 150 mm. The column has a length L = 4 m and is designed to support an axial load of 45 kN. Find the minimum required thickness of the section if the factor of safety n = 2.5 with respect to buckling. Assume that the modulus of elasticity is 72 GPa and the proportional limit is 480 MPa.

The rigid bar ABCD of negligible weight is initially horizontal, and the steel rods attached at A and C are stress-free. The load P is then applied and there is a temperature change in the steel rods. P = 38 kips with the stresses in the two steel rods equal. Assume that there is no buckling in the rods. The coefficient of linear expansion is 6.5 x 10^–6 per degree F and E = 29 x 10^6 psi for steel.
a. Determine the change in temperature. Indicate increase or decrease in temperature.
b. Determine the axial deformation of the steel rod at A (in inches).
c. Determine the axial deformation of the steel rod at C (in inches).
2. The steel compression link shown in the figure has a rectangular cross section and
supports an axial load of P. The supports allow rotation about the strong axis of the
link cross section but prevent rotation about the weak axis. Determine the allowable
compression load Pif the factor of safety of 2.5 is specified. Use the following parameters:
L = 1500 mm, 6 = 20 mm, h = 50 mm, and E = 200 GPa.

An aluminum tube of length 0.01R (m) is used as column (fixed at both ends) carrying an
axial load of 1.333R (N). If the outer diameter of the tube is 0.06R (mm),compute the inner
