The basic mechanism of contraction at the level of myofilaments.

 Introduction:

Myofilaments are made up of proteins, namely actin and myosin, and are filaments of myofibrils. The arrangement of myofilaments within myofibrils enables the muscles to contract. The filaments are arranged in the form of repeated subunits called sarcomeres along the length of myofibrils. The basic unit of muscle contraction and relaxation is sarcomere. A single sarcomere unit extends from one Z-disc to another Z-disc. Besides the Z-disc, sarcomere unit also has one full A (anisotropic) band and half units of two I (isotropic) hands.
