Chapter 10, Problem 3RQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The type of myofilaments in the following:

Actin, myosin heads, myosin, myofilaments that do not lie in the H zone, the myofilaments that do not lie in I band, the filaments that attach to a Z disc.

Introduction:

The myofilaments are myofibril filaments made up of proteins mainly actin and myosin. These are present in the muscle fiber and are the key regulators of muscle contraction. These filaments are the contractile type of proteins which form groups that give the appearance of the repetitive bands to the cytoplasm.

Thick and thin myofilaments have different properties. For each phrase below, indicate whether the filament described is thick or thin (write thick or thin in the blanks).__(1) contains myosin heads__(2) contains actin__(3) does not lie in the H zone__(4) contains myosin__(5) attaches to a Z disc__(6) does not lie in the I band
This is an image of skeletal muscle tissue. Identify the structure labeled "A" (a) (b) myosin fascicle actin sarcomere B A
Skeletal muscle has several distinct fiber types. Type I is used primarily for aerobic activity, whereas type II b is specialized for short, intense bursts of activity. How could you distinguish between these types of muscle fiber if you viewed them with an electron microscope?
