Chapter 10, Problem 10.38P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

Rate of air and oxygen flow in mol/s unit should be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Let us assume x represents rate of air flow (mol/s) and y represents rate of pure oxygen flow rate (mol/s) into the process.

Component material balance equation will be used to determine rate of air flow and oxygen flow.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

Rate of heat transfer for this mixing process should be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

It is considered ideal gas law is followed for the entire mixing process, PV=nRT

This is an isothermal mixing process at constant pressure. Since no moving parts the system, so external work done is zero.

First law of thermodynamics equation, dU=dQ+dW

For isothermal process, dU=0

Therefore, dQ=dW

Integrating for overall process, Q=W

Here W is the total reversible work done in the mixing process to be calculated as follows:

  W=WA+WB= V A V A+ V BPdV V B V A+ V BPdV= V A V A+ V BnARTdV/V V B V A+ V BnBRTdV/V=nARTln VA+VB/VAnBRTln VA+VB/VB=nARTln nA+nB/nAnBRTln nA+nB/nB=nARTln xA+nBRTln xB (applying ideal gas law equation)

Here nA, VA, xA refers to mole of air, volume of air and final mole fraction of air. Similarly, nB, VB, xB refers to mole of oxygen, volume of oxygen and final mole fraction of oxygen.

Rate of heat transfer, Q=nARTln xAnBRTln xB

Interpretation Introduction

(c)

Interpretation:

Rate of entropy generation (WK-1) should be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

Entropy of mixing can be calculated using following formula:

  ΔS=Q/T=nARln xAnBRln xB

Here, n is number of moles, R is Universal gas constant and x is mole fraction.

A piston–cylinder device initially contains 0.6 m3 of saturated water vapor at 250 kPa. At this state, the piston is resting on a set of stops, and the mass of the piston is such  that a pressure of 300 kPa is required to move it. Heat is now slowly transferred to the steam until the volume becomes 1 m3. Use the data from the steam tables. NOTE: This is a multi-part question. Once an answer is submitted, you will be unable to return to this part.   Determine the final temperature.   The final temperature is  ºC. Determine the work done during this process Determine the total heat transfer
Consider a mixture of carbon monoxide and water at 25°C:a. Does an azeotrope exist for this mixture at 25°C? If so, at what composition andpressure? If not, how do you know?b. If the total composition of the mixture is 10. mol% carbon monoxide, what will bethe pressure limits of VLE for this mixture at 25°C?   show all the calculation steps
A passive solar house was determined to lose heat to the outdoors at an average rate of 50,000 kJ/h during a typical 10-hour winter night. The house is to be maintained at 22°C at all times. Passive heating is accomplished by 50 glass containers each containing 20 L of water that is heated to 80°C during the day by absorbing solar energy. A 15-kW back-up electric resistance heater turns on whenever necessary to keep the house at 22°C. (a) How many hours does the electric heating system run during a typical winter night? (b) How many hours would the electric heater run during a typical winter night if the house did not have passive solar heating? For the density and specific heat of water at room temperature, use p = 1 kg/L and cp = 4.18 kJ/kg.°C
