- Case #1: Fight at Brendon Motors
Ronaldo was a Supervisor at Brendon Motors. One Friday afternoon, he noticed a group of employees congregating under a tree on the premises. They were enjoying a few drinks and having a small bar-b-que. This was not the first time that the guys had this impromptu social. They called Ronaldo over and offered him a beer. He joined the group in the small social. Sometime later the guys began to horse around, showing off their boxing skills. It seemed all great fun and laughter until one employee actually misjudged, hit another in the face and cut his nose which started to bleed. The hurt employee got angry and tried to retaliate, but was held off by the others. The social was stopped.
This incident became a point of jokes for the guys, who would tell the victim that he had been beaten by his colleague. The guy (who had made the blow) himself would say that he had ‘kicked the other’s butt’. The company had a policy statement about violence and harassment being unacceptable; that this behaviour would be considered ‘serious misconduct’ and be cause for possible dismissal. The victim came to HR to report that the other employee was harassing him and to demand that he should be dismissed.
