The plasma membrane of a cell is the outermost semipermeable layer which consists of lipids, mostly phospholipids and membrane proteins.  The main function of the plasma membrane is to protect the cell from the external environment and regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell. Cholesterol is also a class of membrane lipid, it is abundantly present in the plasma membrane of mammalian cells. Cell wall is an outer covering of plant cells that surrounds the plasma membrane and provides protection against mechanical and osmotic stress.
