The expression of genes includes two major process: transcription and translation. In transcription, an mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) intermediate is synthesized from template DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the nucleus. The mRNA migrates out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm where its translation into protein begins. In this process, amino acids are added in a stepwise fashion against the codons in the mRNA molecule.
