Question

The reaction 2H2(g)+2CIO(g)------->2H2O(g)+ CI2(g) is first-order in H2 and Second-order in CIO. What is the rate law?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Rate law:

The mathematical expression which relates the rate of reaction with the concentrations of the reactants.

For the general reaction,

a A + b B ---------> c C + d D

Rate law is given by,

Rate = k [A]x [B]y

where,

k = rate constant for the reaction

x, y are the experimental quantities known as order of the reaction with respect to the reactant A and reactant B respectively.

The rate law for any reaction is not represented by balanced chemical equation, but must be determined only by experimentally.
