Question
The engineered peptide in this RIP is designed to bond to certain proteins in the plasma membrane of skin cancer cells. Based on the data discussed here, what might you suspect about the structure of human skin cancer cells?

A. They contain unique membrane proteins not commonly found in other types of human cancer cells

B. Their membrane structure is identical to some other types of human cancer cells
Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPS) interfere with ribosome function, preventing the assembly of amino acids into proteins. Many different types of organisms create RIPS naturally, and some of these are toxic enough to cause death in other
cells. Because of this, some organisms use RIPS as part of their immune systems.
Because of their toxic activity, researchers have been exploring using RIPS as targeted cancer treatments. Dr. Melissa Cheung and her colleagues worked with a natural RIP from E. coli and engineered it to incorporate a peptide that binds to skin
cancer cells. Their hope was that this altered RIP would specifically kill skin cancer cells, which are notoriously resistant to established therapies. They also tested the RIP against other types of cancer cells.
The following graph displays their results, showing the percentage of human cancer cell survival at different concentrations of RIP treatment. Examine the graph then answer the questions that follow.
