One of the Constitutional duties of Congress is oversight, including oversight of laws as well as scandals. Select one scandal from the past 100 years. Give a brief description of the issues involved. What was the outcome of the investigation? Were there lasting policies or legislation as a result of the investigation?
One of the duties of Congress is to conduct investigations and oversight since Congress has all the legislative powers. When the constitution was framed, the drafters assumed that Congress would conduct investigations similar to the House of Commons in Britain. Thus, Congress established early committees, rules, ways and means to formulate a legislative process that includes investigations.
