The first British settlers in the American islands were in the colony of Jamestown. The colony had been specifically chosen since there were fewer natives in the area so the settlers could be ensured of an uninterrupted stay. Following the success of the colony, Puritans back in England were attracted by the idea of starting over in a new region where they could formulate their own laws, especially the laws of religious freedom. This desire led them to leave English shores and arrive in the New World and begin their colony of Plymouth.
