What were John Locke's most significant contributions to American political thought? What did he mean by a "social contract" between a people and their government?
John Locke was an English philosopher and physician who is widely regarded as one of the most persuasive intellectuals of the Enlightenment and is commonly referred to as the "father of liberalism". Liberalism as a political theory was first proposed by John Locke. No political thinker has influenced the political theory of two different countries on two different continents in the way that Locke did. He was a highly influential figure in the 18th century Enlightenment period, and was particularly influential for philosophers such as Rousseau and Voltaire. He is credited with being the founder of modern empiricism, with Hume. Mill, Russell as his representatives. He is an important part of social contract theory.
