Expert Solution
Step 1

During the 17th century, society in England was facing major religious tensions. This was caused by the group who called themselves Puritans and they wanted reform of the Church of England because they felt it had become corrupted. These people also did not accept the festive traditions that surrounded the Christian religion in England. Within the Puritans, two groups existed, one was that of the Separatists, who separated themselves from the Church of England and the other was the Non-Separatists, who only wanted reform and did not want to cut themselves off from the Church. The Puritans had followed the ideals given by John Calvin and other reformers who called themselves Protestants.
