Microbiology lab report (50 points) - There are many local plants and herbal products that claim to have antibiotic or antimicrobial activity. For this report I would like you to research and select a local plant or herbal product that is reported to be antibacterial. Then I want you to design an experiment using the Kirby Bauer method to assess the antibacterial properties of the plant or herb you have selected. Your lab report will require an introduction (describe the plant you have selected and it's reported properties, explain the Kirby Bauer methods for testing unknown plant extracts, include your materials and methods, your predicted results, any conclusions you can draw and your list of references. This assignment requires some research on your part. Select a local plant, or an herbal supplement or something from the grocery store that has reported antibiotic properties. In your introduction, describe the plant you selected and why, how it is used and any interesting history of it's use. Then give background on how you are going to extract the active plant chemicals (usually water or alcohols are used for extraction) and how you are going to test your plant extract for antibiotic properties (I suggested the Kirby Bauer method as one possible option). You should also include what bacteria you want to test your plant extract on. The introduction is the history and background for your research/lab report. Next is materials and methods, here you list all the materials you will need and a detailed protocol to follow for your methods (remember to include controls, extraction protocols, bacteria to be tested, all protocols to be followed!). If someone wanted to duplicate your research, this is how you should describe your methods. You can describe expected results and how you will determine if your plant really does have antibiotic properties (what will you measure). Lastly you can include a discussion of your expected results and any conclusions you can draw based on what you expect to happen based on what has been reported in past research. Include your literature cited, what resources did you use to develop your proposed research/lab project. This lab report is worth 50 points for the microbiology lab portion of this course.
