Introduction

DNA supercoiling is an important process for the cells as it allows the packing of large DNA into a small cycle. Supercoiling of the DNA helps in reducing the large size required to accommodate the DNA into the cell. The supercoiling in prokaryotes is different than eukaryotes as in prokaryotes the plectonemic supercoils are dominant while in eukaryotes both plectonemic and solenoid supercoils are founds. Solenoid supercoils can form a 10 nm to 30 nm coil with the help of histones proteins. The supercoiling of the DNA increases vastly during the cell divisions such as mitosis and meiosis as the replicated DNA must be supercoiled and transferred to the daughter cells. Besides these supercoiling also help in DNA and RNA synthesis
