The Elgin marbles. Why are they so controversial? What are the issues surrounding them? In your opinion, to whom should they belong? Why?
The Elgin Marbles are dated back to the time of the Classical Greek times. All the sculptures are made of these marbles which were supervised by Phidios who was a sculptor himself. During the ancient period, these marbles which are also known as Parthenon marbles were damaged due to earthquakes. There is a belief that lord Elgin of England was the ambassador of the Ottoman Empire during which he had looted some of these marbles from Parthenon. Therefore, this is how the marbles got its name as the "Elgin Marbles".
