Gazebo built on a deck near a dock prior to my purchasing the property (2021). Town has now issued me a summons saying no permits were applied for prior to the Gazebo being built (around 2013). I showed proof that the Gazebo was there before I bought my home, but they want me to prove it was built prior to their regulations (wouldn't they know when regulations went into effect?). I have been through all town codes and can not find anything regarding this ordinance . Any suggestions? Thank you for your time

Note: The solution is provided in a generalized way.
Structures or properties that were built prior to the application of certain rules, ordinances, or zoning restrictions by a local authority or government are often referred to as built prior to the regulations. In this sense, it denotes that a gazebo or other structure was built before the legislation controlling such structures was put in place. Establishing that a structure was constructed prior to the regulations can be critical in property-related legal matters because it may exempt the structure from compliance with newer regulations, or it may require proof of its pre-existing status to avoid legal issues or penalties associated with non-compliance.
