Explain how a pn junction works. Specifically, what happens when you bring together a block of p-type material and a block of n-type material? Why is a depletion region formed? Why do we have an electric field with no applied voltage? Why is there a built-in voltage with no applied voltage? Explain the I-V curve of a pn junction

A pn junction is created when we bring a p-type semiconductor in physical contact with n-type semiconductor. A p-region has greater concentration of holes while n-region has greater concentration of electrons. In a p-region free holes are known as majority carriers because these have high concentration while free electrons are known as minority carriers because these have low concentration. In n-region situation is just opposite to p region. Here free holes are known as minority carriers because these have low concentration while free electrons are known as majority carriers because of high concentration.
