Question

During transcription, only some of the DNA bases are transcribed. What parts of the DNA or/and protein(s) determines which part of the genome is transcribed into mRNA?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Transcription is the first step in gene expression, the process by which genetic information is converted into a functional product, such as a protein. During transcription, the information stored in DNA is copied into a complementary molecule of RNA (messenger RNA, or mRNA). This mRNA molecule serves as a template for the production of a protein, which occurs during a subsequent process called translation.

Transcription is performed by an enzyme called RNA polymerase, which reads the DNA sequence and synthesizes a complementary RNA molecule. The RNA polymerase starts at a specific site on the DNA, called the promoter, and moves along the strand, adding nucleotides to the growing RNA molecule. When the RNA polymerase reaches a termination signal, it stops transcription and releases the completed mRNA molecule.
