I'm trying to write a method that just like this

int top()
{
     if (q1.empty())
         return -1;
     return q1.front();
}

but instead of using int I'm using a template that looks like this so far (don't change template or const lines)

(CANT CHANGE "const T& Stack::top()"

template // don't change this at all
const T& Stack::top() // don't change this at all
{
     T item;
      if(!q1.empty())
      {
             item=(T)q1.front();
             return item;
}

It gives me warnings "reference to local variable 'item' returned. so I'm not sure how to properly handle it as a type T instead of an int. I also don't understand how to do something like "return -1" if the q1 is empty. thank you
