Expert Solution
Step 1

NaCl has a FCC structure for compounds. Each sodium atoms is surrounded by 6 chloride atoms and each chloride atom is surrounded by 6 sodium atoms. This means that each atom has 6 atoms of opposite kind as its nearest neighbors. Each atom also has 12 atoms of same kind as the next-nearest neighbors.

Considering that the atoms are perfect spheres, we assume that the nearest neighbors touch each other, such that the distance from the center of one atom to its nearest neighbor is the bond length.
