Chapter 3
Bilbo and the dwarves approach the Misty Mountains, where they put up with Gandalf’s Elrond. When they reach the valley of Rivendell, they are greeted by singing elves. Elrond is a hospitable elf, and the group stays with him for fourteen days, eating, singing, and telling tales. Elrond identifies the swords which Gandalf and Thorin have recovered from the trolls’ cave. He tells them that Thorin’s sword is named Orcrist and Gandalf’s is Glamdring.
Elrond also interprets the moon-letters on Thorin’s map. The letters inform the reader that they must stand by a stone near a thrush on Durin’s Day, and the setting sun will shine on a key-hole. Thorin explains that Durin’s Day is the first day of the dwarves’ New Year. The next day, the group resumed its journey to go over the Misty Mountains.
Elrond plays an important role in explaining to Thorin and Gandalf the significance of the swords they took from the trolls’ cave. The swords are legendary and were used to kill Goblins. They are also associated with the dragon from whom the dwarves wish to reclaim their treasure.
