Chapter 10

As they move down the river, Bilbo spots the Lonely Mountain to the north. From the raftmen’s conversations, he understands that the topography has undergone changes since Gandalf’s last visit. The raftmen also mention that one can move out of Mirkwood via river. The narrator also informs us that Gandalf has learnt about the recent events and is on his way back to the dwarves. Bilbo remains unaware of this.

The group arrives at Lake-town, tired and hungry. Thorin announces that he is a descendant of King under Mountain and demands to see the Master. The Master is hesitant to host the group but agrees because the townspeople insist. They make merry and feast for two weeks before leaving for the Lonely Mountain to finish their quest.
