Overview
A Walk to Remember is a novel by American writer Nicholas Sparks, published in October 1999. Set in 1958–1959 in Beaufort, North Carolina, the novel is about teenagers who fall in love with each other despite having different personalities. Although classified as a love story, A Walk to Remember is a classic coming-of-age novel, in which the protagonist undergoes significant transformation.
The protagonist, Landon Worth, is apparently based on Sparks’ sister’s husband. The novel is considered a tribute to their eternal love and companionship. The story starts with a prologue from Landon Carter at age 57, but the rest of the story takes place when Landon is a 17-year-old high school senior. The novel revolves around Landon and Jamie, the daughter of the local Baptist minister.
Perceived as belonging to the romantic genre, this work takes us to an older time when respect and honor were important values in small-town America. The novel upholds a simple life, filled with honesty, care, and true love.
