Exams should be submitted only once and should be submitted via Blackboard by the due date.
Late submissions will not be accepted.
- Applied Prompt & Questions -
The recent pandemic has dramatically changed many of our lives in so many ways. From a public health
perspective, there has been great interest in understanding the factors that might contribute to or directly
impact the severity of CoVID-19.
A researcher wishes to evaluate the severity of CoVID-19 (“low” i.e., asymptomatic/mild or “high” i.e.,
severe/critical) for patients with different self-described smoking histories (current, former, or never
smoker). In order to assess the possible relationship between CoVID-19 severity and patient smoking
history, data for CoVID-19 patients from a local hospital were collected and are provided in a data table.
*Note: The ‘CoVID-19 Data’ is provided on Blackboard or was emailed to you by your instructor.
Your instructor will supply the data table to you by either posting the data table in your course
Blackboard page along with these guidelines or by sending you the data table via university email.
Different sections of the course and even different students within each section of the course may have
different data tables. Consequently, use
ONLY
the data supplied to you directly from your instructor to
complete the following prompts. Failing to do so could result in your answers being incorrect.

1)
Using the data table, find and report the following probabilities:
a.
The probability that one randomly selected patient is experiencing
High
CoVID-19 severity given
they are a
Never
Smoker i.e.,
࠵?(High | Never)
.
b.
The probability that one randomly selected patient is experiencing
High
CoVID-19 severity given
they are an “Ever” Smoker meaning that they are a
Current
or
Former
Smoker, i.e.,
࠵?(High | Current or Former)
.
2)
Using StatCrunch
*
and the available data, construct a 99% Confidence Interval for the proportion of
all patients experiencing
High
CoVID-19 severity if they are a
Never
Smoker.
Let
࠵?(High | Never) = ࠵?̂
!"#"$
a.
Report the confidence interval
using proper notation
.
b.
In one to two complete sentences, state an interpretation for this confidence interval.

b.
In one to two complete sentences, state an interpretation for this confidence interval.
4)
One research question that could be posed using the available data: “Is there an advantage to being a
Never
smoker when it comes to CoVID-19 severity?” Essentially, we would like to know if the rate
of
High
CoVID-19 severity is lower for Never smokers than it is for Current/Former smokers.
Determine a method that would be appropriate for answering this research question. Using
StatCrunch
*
and the available data, perform the statistical procedure deemed appropriate.
Hint
: In order to adequately answer this question, you will need to perform an additional statistical
procedure and go beyond the CI estimates already constructed in Questions 2-3 above.
a.
What method did you use to answer the research question e.g., One-Sample t-Test for Means?
b.
Why did you select this particular method to answer the research question?
c.
In one to two complete sentences, summarize and interpret the relevant findings of your analysis
in the context of the research question i.e., what do the findings suggest about the impact of
smoking history on CoVID-19 severity?
d.
If your findings in 4c were surprising, what might we be missing? Suggest another factor or
factors that might be missing in the current study, leading us to this surprising result.
* Please remember to submit all StatCrunch work used for your responses to Questions 2-4.

Medlin and Associates is a regional certified public accounting (CPA) firm located near Minneapolis. Recently, a team conducted an audit for a discount chain. One part of the audit involved developing anestimate for the mean dollar error in total charges that occurs during the checkout process. The firm wishes to develop a 95% confidence interval estimate for the population mean. The data cpaf irm.csvcan be read into Minitab. Note that positive values indicate that the customer was overcharged.

The overall distance traveled by a golf ball is tested by hitting the ball with Iron Byron, a
mechanical golfer with a swing that is said to emulate the distance hit by the legendary champion
Byron Nelson. Ten randomly selected balls of two different brands are tested and the overall
distance measured.
Brand 1: 275, 286, 287, 271, 283, 271, 279, 275, 263, 267
Brand 2: 258, 244, 260, 265, 273, 281, 271, 270, 263, 268
a) Is there evidence to support the claim that the standard deviation of overall distance is the
same for both brands of balls (use α = 0.05)?
b) Is there evidence to support the claim that the mean of the overall distance is the same for
both brands of balls (use α = 0.05)?
