Prep Sheet. Chapter 13 Inferential Statistics Before you begin: 1. Download this file 2. Save the file Complete assignment : 1. Read all instructions for each section or item as you go. 2. Type your answers into colored spaces provided. Answer the following items based on the content of Chapter 13, “Inferential Statistics”, from your textbook Research Methods in Psychology : https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/psychmethods4e/part/experimental-research/ . 1. What is sampling error? A random variability is a statistic from sample to sample. The term error here refers to random variability and does not imply that anyone has made a mistake. 2. What is the null hypothesis for a statistical relationship? Is a formal approach to deciding two interpretations of a statistical relationship in a sample. 3. What is the alternative or research hypothesis for a statistical relationship? This is the idea that there is a relationship in the population and that the relationship in the sample reflects this relationship in the population. 4. When do we say a result is statistically significant? We say a result is statistically significant If there is a 5% chance or less of a result at least as extreme as the sample results if the null hypothesis were true, then the null hypothesis is rejected. 5. What is the difference between statistical significance and practical significance? Practical significance refers to the importance or usefulness of the results In some real world context. Statistical significance shows that there is an effect in the study. 1
6. A researcher was examining the difference between two means (the mean amount that men procrastinate vs the mean amount that women procrastinate). What is the most common null hypothesis test for this type of statistical relationship? The most common null hypothesis test is that there is no difference in the two population means or a statistical significance. 7. Please identify something you did not understand as well as you would have liked from this chapter OR something you would like more explanation on. Something I didn’t understand was question number 6 and what it was really asking for. After you finish : 1. Save your work (by clicking Save since you have the file already named). 2.
