Hypothesis testing is used to make inferences about a population based on sample data. The first step in this type of testing is to state the hypothesis in null and alternative forms. The null hypothesis ( H 0 ) is a statement of no difference. The alternative hypothesis ( H a ) contradicts the null hypothesis (Gerstman, 2015). The goal of hypothesis testing is to attempt to gather evidence to either reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.             My chosen health question  is, “Does gender affect the length of stay after myocardial infarction?’ Data was collected from all MI patients admitted to hospitals in the Worcester, MA area. This took place for 13 one-year periods beginning in 1975 through 2001 (Hosmer et al., 2008).   Null hypothesis  ( H 0 ): The null hypothesis suggests that gender does not affect a patient’s length of stay after myocardial infarction.   Alternative hypothesis  ( H a ): The alternative hypothesis is that gender does affect a patient’s length of stay after myocardial infarction. Statistical Notation:   H 0 : µ1 = µ2 H a : µ1 ≠ µ2   Alternative Wording:   Null Hypothesis:   A patient’s gender does not affect their length of hospital stay after MI.   Alternative Hypothesis:   There is a relationship between gender and length of hospital stay after MI.
