Gender Stereotyping Niajetae Lyles Walden University Dr. Rose DPSY 6218
African American Gender Stereotypes Gender stereotypes are generalizations about the characteristics of men or women. In the African American culture, men and women are held to a multitude of stereotypes. Gender stereotypes can add additional pressure and can influence how people of this culture act while in society. Gender stereotypes can be detrimental to one’s mental health starting at a young age. For example, a common gender stereotype that affects children are boys should be tough and girls should be caring. Placing this stereotype on children while they are trying to figure out their emotions for themselves could cause identity issues in children. It also can lead to being bullied. Children first environment of learning is at home, so what is being taught at home is important. According to the OHCHR, gender stereotypes are harmful when it limits women’s and men’s capacity to develop their personal abilities, pursue their professional careers and/or make choices about their lives (United Nations, 2022). Gender stereotypes can affect how individuals see themselves based on the consensus about their gender (Hentschel et., al, 2019). I was affected by gender stereotypes as a child. While in grade school, I was bullied because I was rougher around the edges and not as sensitive as the girls in my class. Their main reason for bullying me was that I could fit in with the boys and could play with them without being hurt easily. This made me alter how I portrayed myself while in society. Growing up, I sheltered my true self while in public so that I could be accepted and live up to gender norms. By masking my true personality, it caused me to become unsure of who I truly was. It led to an identity crisis during my first two years of high school, and I did not understand how to fit into society without standing out by not conforming to gender norms. During my final two years, I had to go into therapy to address the issues that I was struggling. As a result of therapy, I learned that I could be different and still coexist with those in the society around me.
