2 Assessment Tools for Children Why did you select the assessment tool? The assessment tool I chose for this week is the NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment Scale. This assessment tool is given to parents and teachers of children aged six to 12 to review a child’s symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and then given to the child’s doctor to aid in diagnosis (Ellingwood, 2017). ADHD is becoming increasingly common in school-aged children. As a mental health professional working with adults, there is also a high prevalence of ADHD in this population. I chose this assessment because it is thorough and easy for parents and teachers to understand. The NICHQ looks at a child’s behavior in multiple settings, such as home and school, giving a more complete picture of behaviors. Why might it be especially helpful for use with children? The NICHQ takes a deep dive into the symptoms of ADHD that a child might be experiencing at home and school. This tool can quickly help clinicians pinpoint significant areas of concern and determine the severity and the best course of treatment. The tool can help track symptoms over time to see if treatment is helping. What challenges or limitations might there be for this assessment tool? Teachers and parents rate a child’s behavior based on their observations at home and in the classroom. This can create discrepancies as children often behave differently at school and at home. Additionally, this tool is left open to interpretation; thus, it is a subjective measurement. Two people may have different opinions about acceptable levels of distractibility; for example, one person may think it is more severe than the other. This tool does not take into account any potential diagnosis other than ADHD; for instance, many children with learning disabilities exhibit similar symptoms to ADHD.
