Week 5 Discussion Williams-Day Social Justice : Is that everyone deserves economic, political, and social rights and opportunities. It’s the social workers goal to open doors for all to access those opportunities. This picture is a great example of Social Justice. It’s speaking about voting rights for all. The Voting Rights Act (1965) was established to prohibit discriminatory voting practices in many southern states after the Civil War. Today this battle continues, where illegal voting practices are still occurring. August 24, 2021, The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act was passed . This bill established new guidelines for determining which states and political subdivisions must obtain preclearance before changes to voting practices may take effect. Thank you to all that continue fighting for the equal rights of ALL mankind. (Sewell, 2021) Economic Justice: Is to create opportunities for all to thrive. To provide fair opportunities for each person to thrive, no matter your race or gender. To provide all people an equal chance to basic employment and income to provide for themselves and or families and excel to their fullest potential. The bank pictured in this photo is about 5 miles from my home. This is Industrial Bank an historic African American owned bank. The bank was established in 1913. The bank closed in 1932 but re- opened by Howard University alumnus Jesse Mitchell in 1934. Bank faced staffing issues, because white bank workers were unwilling to work for a black bank. In 2013 the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation invested $1 million dollars in certificates of deposit to encourage lending to the African American community. (Bhattaria, 2013) This provided opportunities small business loans and housing loans for the African American community. We know today, there continues to be a resistance with ALL receiving far opportunities to thrive. It’s not an overnight resolution to this problem but a day-by-day persistence to advocate for equality.
Environmental Justice: All people have the right to be protected from environmental pollution, access to healthy food, educational services and unsafe homes/communities. These are a few friends of mine. Permission was given to me, to use this picture. This picture is an example of Environmental Justice. This group was providing community clean and selling food and giving food away for a non-profit community program called “For Love of Children”. Program provides out of classroom educational services, to under resourced youth. Providing a safe, clean healthy environment goes a long way not just for children but anyone. References 1.
