What are considered suicide risk factors? How might these factors be exacerbated in a correctional facility? What constructive measures can be taken by correctional facilities administrators to curb suicide? In the current state of society, suicide is a major issue. Economic and social progress has enabled us to experience physical contentment, however, it has not enabled us to experience mental tranquility, leading us to the development of various forms of living. Factors of suicide: ï‚· Social Pressure: Society plays a critical role in the development of human capabilities, however, the social pressure that society exerts can have a detrimental effect on a person if they are not provided with the necessary support to manage it. ï‚· Depression: Depression is a major contributing factor to suicide. The depression is caused by a variety of factors and if a person experiences prolonged periods of depression, the likelihood committing suicide increases. "Among 1,900 offenders in the Canadian federal correctional system, lifetime depressive disorders ranged from 21.5% (stringent criteria) to 29.8% (Fagan & Ax 2011)." ï‚· Feeling of worthlessness: The human condition is distinct from other forms of non-human life. A person desires to be a part of society and to possess the full value associated with social structure. Therefore, if a person perceives the worthlessness of social structure, the likelihood of suicide increases. ï‚· Physical problems: In some instances, individuals with physical impairments or chronic illnesses may contemplate suicide due to the belief that they do not fit into the social norm and society does not desire them. ï‚· Other problems: Suicides may be committed for a variety of reasons, which may vary from person to person. These reasons may include financial difficulties, interpersonal issues, self-dealing, emotional disorders, substance abuse, etc. It is essential for clinicians in correctional settings to identify individuals who may be at risk of developing suicidal ideation, as well as the emotional distress associated with it, in order to provide clinical intervention. Studies have demonstrated that hopelessness is more likely to be associated with suicidal ideation, compared to depression, and this is in line with other research which has demonstrated a strong and consistent correlation between hopelessness and suicidal thoughts and behavior. The United Nations launched a Let's talk mission in response to depression last year, with the aim of providing constructive solutions to reduce the rate of suicide. This mission is intended to address the underlying causes of major social
issues, and the inclusion of individuals with mental health issues in the social fabric may be a key factor in achieving this goal. In order to better identify, manage, and prevent the risk of suicide among prisoners, recommendations should be made to address a variety of potential variables that can be modulated clinically, psycho-socially, and through environmental factors (Marzano,et. al., 2016). These factors can have a significant impact on the likelihood of severe suicide attempts. Fagan, T. J., & Ax, R. K. (2011). Correctional mental health . SAGE Publications.
