2 As a social worker working with a client in Situation 1, my decisions would be influenced by informal exchanges with other professionals, personal experiences, and the results of controlled experimental studies. Informal exchanges with other professionals can have an impact on my decision-making because it opens the door to collaborative work and provides the opportunity to gain more knowledge and ideas from different perspectives. Personal experience can have a significant impact on my decision-making, allowing me to understand and improve the delivery of my services and interventions, and build on previous successes and failures. The results of controlled experimental studies would also play a significant role in my decision-making as it would allow me to use the data that has been collected from those methods to support the effectiveness of my approach and potentially identify new interventions for better outcomes. In Situation 2, my decisions were the same on how I would want to be helped as a client by a physician. Meaning, I would expect to receive and provide an equivalent quality of care, the same treatment, and comparable standards for making decisions in practice from the physician. Even so, as a client I would anticipate the physician to be knowledgeable in their field of validated research. The most efficacious method of treatment for a client’s success is the use of research and evidence informed practice decisions. Evidence-based research provides social workers with a number of benefits and allows them to anchor their decisions in practice. An immense amount of research data undergoes yearly evaluation and revisions, therefore keeping social workers well-versed on the latest developments, while encouraging them to critically evaluate their preconceived notions and seek out new information to help their clients. Findings from research and evidence can also influence decision-making on micro, mezzo, and macro levels.
3 The combination of theories and research evidence to administer quality treatment to clients plays an integral role in our clinical decision-making processes. “Knowledge, in contrast to facts, requires theory, that is, a framework of interconnected concepts that gives meaning and explanation to relevant events and supports new insights and problem-solving efforts" (Lipsey, 1993). Theory serves to explain or predict situations and provides a rationale as to the course of action that is needed to alleviate presenting problems (Teater, 2015). As social workers, it is important to practice in our area of competence in order to continuously enhance our knowledge and skills, and contribute to the knowledge of the profession (NASW, 2021). For example, during my fieldwork experience, most of my clients struggled with food insecurity. To make clinically informed decisions, I used theories such as conflict theory to guide my practices with clients. Conflict theory was useful as it allowed me to identify the root causes, as well as the effects, and long-term persistence of food insecurity on those clients.
