Bias and self-awareness My experience completing the implicit bias test has given me more insight into my practice of being more culturally competent. The test gave me enough time actually to think about things. I chose the implicit bias test on social attitudes, the study that was conducted was exploring implicit associations of black people and white people with the concepts of victim and perpetrator. In addition to this experience, it reminds me of how black men are profiled as perpetrators instead of victims. Based on the assessment that was taken, it placed me to result in an “automatic association of perpetrator White Americans and a victim with Black Americans” if you were faster responding when White Americans and perpetrator were assigned to the same response key than when giving the same response to Black Americans and perpetrator items” Harvard University Project Implicit. (2011). I thought does this make me race towards white Americans, my stepmother is white, and I love her for the person she is not by color. The study explores implicit associations of racial groups with concepts such as victim and perpetrator. However, the study teaches us about how the implicit system works with her intellect. Depending on the stimulation provided before taking the test, many things influence how a participant's answers could change, sometimes in minutes. In this week's discussion and last week's activities self-awareness that has emerged so far, is having more knowledge on power and privilege, social class, and gender expression. Being more self-aware can help me understand my wants, needs, and desires as well as my strengths and weaknesses. In addition, self-awareness will help me in my current profession as well as future when something that I am uncomfortable with. Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about; this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have to be. A specific population that I am not
Bias and self-awareness comfortable with and would like to know more about is the Native American tribe. I encountered a situation working at the hospital where the patient's family called and stated they were calling on the patient's behalf of a Native American tribe. They also reported that I was not being cultured sensitivity. I have since researched that Native Americans' beliefs about health are based on the concept of harmony with oneself, the environment, and the mind, body, and soul Bassett D, Tsosie U, Nannauck S(2012). I want to be more aware so I can have the knowledge to know and also how to provide services to them.
