Global Population 1 Global Population Latasha Gibson Walden University SOCW 6051 Dr. Candice Beasley July 2, 2023 Abstract The global population for immigration to the United States has occurred for many years. Immigrants have entered the United States through several ports, such as by water, underground tunnels, walking through the desert, and several other ways. Once in the United States, most immigrants are attracted to jobs such as factory work or landing jobs for farming. In addition, men are paid less when working on farming jobs than other workers, and women are also paid less when working on farms and in factory jobs. Social support also buffers the effect of neighborhood disadvantage on distress (Rios, Aiken, & Zautra, 2012). For elderly people living in the high-poverty neighborhood of Little Havana, a primarily Cuban community in Miami, having a front porch increased feelings of social support. It buffered against stress (Brown et al., 2009).
Global Population 2 I identify Cuban immigrants migrating to the United States for better work opportunities, better living conditions, education, safety from violence in their country, and better economic output growth. Based on the two peer-reviewed research articles I found, I could identify Cuba. Cuba has a high rise in drug abuse, prostitution, and crime. There has also been a rise in children with disabilities and low poverty rates, teen pregnancy, and numerous out-of-school children, the unemployment rate is very high, and senior citizens have increased. “These issues alone make individuals want to migrate to the US for a better life. “The government needed social workers to assist community members in "learning how" to participate in projects aimed at improving social conditions in the community, according to a former director of social work at the University of Havana (C. Proveyer, personal communication, 10 April 2004)”. I researched that Cuba needs social workers in their community to assist with ongoing crises with housing and better economic opportunities and social problems in its poorest
Global Population 3 neighborhoods. Cuba continues to have food, housing, medicine, and medical equipment shortages. “Cuba’s dual currency system, created in response to the economic crisis of the early 1990s, also presents multiple challenges to the economy and has, one Cuban representative reported, increased socioeconomic stratification within the country”. Social Workers are needed to assist with basic needs involving housing and food. Social Workers can advocate for the Cuban government for funds to help with the low poverty rate and housing. Social workers’ roles have grown to include crisis management as well as functions of empowerment and advocacy. Social workers can empower the communities in Cuba by helping individuals to take an operative role in molding social services providing education projects, any authorizing long-term supply and demand for independence.
