Name: Thomas C. DePew Date: 12/22/2023 ITMG481 Week 7 Assignment (3% of Grade) APUS/Yocam Lesson 7 Review: Environmental Concern & Natural Resource Issues The purpose of this activity is to reinforce what you have learned so far about environmental concern and natural resource issues 1. What are online communities, and how do they differ from traditional communities? (Minimum word count: 120) A community is defined as a group of people who live together in an area of physical proximity to each other. Online communities share the same aspect just defined in a different way. Online communities are a group of people who share a mutual interest in something and are linked together in a group now there are differences between the two. Online communities gather via networking through the internet. Regular defined communities live together in a physically public area versus cyberspace. Online communities have created a mental community that shares mutual interests whereas regular communities share responsibilities or concerns within the community. Online communities partake in virtual discussions and regular communities have various meetings and conversation types (Connelly, 2019). 2. What is a blog, and in which ways do blogs function as online communities? (Minimum word count: 120) A blog is a page on a website or is a website all its own that is usually updated either daily or weekly depending on the topic. It is typically run by an individual or a group of individuals with the same ideals where they discuss shared topics, issues, and concerns. Blogs have become a staple in the online community usually you will see more blogs on online community sites. This is a way for the online community to communicate with each other and express their thoughts on concerns they have. Usually, these topics are driven by the communities shared interests such as politics. So, the function that blogs serve for online communities is one of community communication organizer and it serves as the base of communication for online communities (Connelly, 2019).
3. How have online communities facilitated social polarization? (Minimum word count: 120) Since online communities are groups that share issues, values, and concerns, they have served as an outlet of thought and communication for those groups. Although as anyone can tell you, you only hear the opinion of those that think like you for example look at politics. Then your spectrum of thought becomes a singularity and not necessarily a consensus of society and societal values. This leads to divisive thinking and groups. The separation is how online community enables societal polarization. It is meant to keep groups of like thinkers interacting and communicating with others in their online community. This enables social polarization by giving others only one perception of views and issues. 4. In which ways do online communities cause us to reexamine our traditional notion of friendship? (Minimum word count: 120) Since todays use of social media and social interaction has become more and more technological based. People have learned to gain online access to communicate and interact with one another. Online communities are built more on the notion of people with like concerns, issues, and values communicating with one another. As they are interacting with one another more and more, soon they begin to think of each other as friends. This differs from traditional friends whose interactions are usually face to face. 5. How do online communities facilitate anonymity and deception? (Minimum word count: 120) Online communities can enable anonymity and deception this allows someone to create online personas of themselves that reflect who they are but maybe not 100% of who they are. They can create these accounts and interact in these online communities with the deception and anonymity of not really knowing who they are and what their views really are. This is because of the lack of real face to face interaction and knowledge of their true culture, communities, and environments in which they interact in daily. Works Cited
