What evidence can you see in Sean’s life for the following challenges:
-
Forming an identity
-
Forming an occupation
-
Forming supportive relationships
Sean has encountered several challenges on his journey of forming an identity due to the fact
that he is unable to scope out a clear understanding of what he wanted to pursue in life both
academically and professionally. His career path was constantly under scrutiny and revaluation
by no one other than himself; this caused certain aspects of his identity to be under the guise of
confusion. There is specific evidence pointing to the previously mentioned “confusion” as he
kept on changing his academic endeavors, initially studying at Trent University and dropping
that within a short period of time. He then proceeded to take up employment at a pizza
restaurant establishment; however, he soon left that for further education at Seneca college
within the Landscape Design And Management Program. Furthermore, he found the field
relatively interesting to pursue a possible career within. However, the developmental stage of
adolescence, and young adulthood is in essence for self discovery and an opportunity to
discover a career path which he finds interesting and would be interested in for the foreseeable
future, and would be relatively successful within. Additionally, external and societal factors
greatly steered this process of discovery. Initially, he was influenced by his mother to follow in
her footsteps and become a teacher, however through his experiences and influence of his
instructor at Seneca College he was able to find his true passion within the wildlife field, which
ended up being his true passion and “dream job”. Furthermore, he also initially felt a sense of
unreadiness when it came to his intimate relationship with Susan; however, he has started to
come to terms with the permanent bond of marriage and has started to seriously imagine a
bright future with his partner, while forming a supportive relationship with her.

How did the following significant other people influence Sean’s development?
-
His parents
-
Susan
-
His instructor at seneca college
Sean’s development is a combination of several different reasons and factors. Societal and
external factors were one of the biggest driving forces within his development. Initially it was his
parents which were the largest influential factor within his life, as he looked up to them as role
models and was heavily influenced by their personal development, specifically their career
paths. His mother was the larger influential force out of the two, as Sean realized his passion for
teaching and made him initially want to pursue a career in teaching as his mother was already
within the field. However, after going through several life experiences he ended up at Seneca
College where his instructor heavily influenced his development and influenced him to a career
in the wildlife officer path, in addition to bird in watching and developing/helping Sean realize his
passion for animals and nature. Furthermore, his partner Susan has in a way made Sean more
permanent, serious, and committed to his future in general and also specifically their joint future
through the means of marriage and “settling down”.
3.
How does Sean’s life reflect what Jeffrey Arnett calls a time of “independent
exploration”? What behavior of an emerging adult might be independent
exploration?
Jeffrey Arneet’s conception of “Independent exploration” is clearly manifested through Sean’s
life. In his pursuit to find his passion and his dream job he explored many career opportunities;
aspiring to be a teacher like his mother he attended Trent University in geography but later
decided he wanted to pursue landscape designing. Eventually, he decided to pursue his career
and passion in environmental issues. Testament to the many career possibilities he explored, it
has a strong correlation with Jeffrey Arnett’s concept of “Independent exploration”. Most
emerging adults are often overwhelmed with the possible careers they can pursue, hence
usually lack the knowledge to make the choice that is truly aligned with their dreams and
passion. Thus, they are often forced to resort to independent exploration. Adults in this phase
are often confused, overwhelmed, and frustrated with the impulse to choose the best career
option among the numerous options available. They often will also change career interests
many times to experiment and recognize their true passion and dream.
4.
Is Sean an adult now? What criteria would you use for your answer?
To be considered an adult one must take responsibility for themself and be able to make
independent decisions contingent on your interests and dreams. Furthermore, to really
determine if Sean can be considered an adult it is completely dependent on the different
perspectives and definitions we consider in the criteria and definition of an adult. From a legal
standpoint, Sean is legally considered an adult as he is well over the age of 18; however, if we
consider psychological , sociological and cultural factors, this answer can vary. Sean in many
instances has displayed many of the aforementioned factors to a high degree. For example,
Sean’s desire to continue his post-secondary education to further enhance his career and live a
better life in comparison to others who didn’t pursue post secondary education, illustrates his
strong psychological skills. A few examples of psychological skills include goal setting,
confidence and self-regulation. Sean has clearly demonstrated these skills through this action.
This is evident as Sean’s primary goal (inferred from the paragraph) was to find the career that
best aligns with his interests and passion. In the process of achieving this goal, he surely has
implemented and utilized his goal settings skills. Despite the many college courses he had
dropped and changed, he did not allow sociological factors like social discern and education to
deter him from achieving his goal. Therefore, from the aforementioned reasons Sean can be
deemed an adult even when considering psychological , sociological, cultural factors and legal
factors.

Personal description of 5 qualities in adults that matter most to you. Include a
description of each quality so I can really understand what you mean.
Responsibility:
-
When younger individuals look up to responsible adults, they are able to see how they
take ownership for their actions and hold themselves accountable for their decisions.
Furthermore, their dedication to honor deadlines while completing the tasks with a high
degree of responsibility and commitment with efficient time management and realistic
goals; allow for younger individuals to realize the importance of their time and how to
spend it efficiently.
Integrity:
-
The importance of younger individuals and children seeing role model adults with a
sense of integrity is of the utmost importance. Since it helps them see the significance of
remaining honest and ethically conscious when making decisions ensuring they will face
challenges while being morally right and just. A sense of integrity is a concept and factor
which is not essentially instilled within a younger individual from birth in my opinion, it is
something which needs to be developed and nurtured; so the child can become a
human with high moral standards while remaining honest and integrity within their lives
to create a better community and overall better world with less hatred, and lies.
Leadership:
-
Leadership is the ability to guide and influence others in order to achieve a common
goal. This skill is very crucial for adults in many different aspects of their life; their
personal and professional career. To me, Individuals and adults with strong leadership
skills are able to advance better in their career and create a positive impact on the
organization. Adults with strong leadership ability are able to create a meaningful impact
on society and the younger generation.
NEXT PAGE CONTINUED:
Self-awareness:
-
Self awareness is very crucial for the growth of adults as it allows individuals to better
comprehend their emotions, skills, strength and weakness. Adults with this skill will be
able to make the most optimal and logical decision which allows them to succeed both in
their personal and professional life. Moreover, adults will be able to take actions that
align best with their values and aspirations allowing them to live a more authentic and
purposeful life.
Optimism:
-
Optimism is a very important attribute as it contributes to overall mental well-being and
success both in their professional and personal life. Employing an optimistic mindset
allows adults to conquer adversities in the most optimal way. It increases the likelihood
of the individual maintaining his mental well-being while simultaneously increasing the
likelihood of persevering through challenges and difficulties. Moreover, an optimistic
mindset in adults motivates the younger generation to strive towards a similar mindset
and build a more positive and fulfilling life.

Make connections to (and apply) one of the developmental theorist:
The four stages of the Hindu Life Cycle makes parallels with
Eriksons, Loevinger, and Levinson.
Erikson’s theory has a strong correlation with the Hindu Life Cycle as the 8 cycles mentioned in his
theory are fundamentally similar to the Four Stages. Firstly let’s discuss how Erikson’s theory
connects with the Hindu Life Cycle. The first Cycle: Brahmacharya/ Trust vs. Mistrust: Erkison,
encompasses how infants need to be taken care of consistently and in a positive and supportive
environment. As these early stages fundamental structure the mindset and life of the infant. The
connection between Erikson’s Theory and the Hindu Life Cycle is very evident through the
fundamental nature of the messages they both convey. To elaborate, Brahmacharya( First Stage of
the Hindu Life Cycle) emphasizes the importance of education and developing your relationship with
your peers. By building a strong educational foundation and strong relationships with your teachers,
simulates Erikson's prominence on building a strong foundation early in life which allows a better life
in the future. This correction between the two theories is also manifested through
Grihastha/Intimacy vs. Isolation. According to Erikson's in this stage(stage 6), individuals often
attempt to build robust and meaningful romantic relationships. Completing this stage successfully
will result in the individual being considered “Intimacy”. Erikson further elaborates and emphasizes
that by establishing a relationship like such will result in a more fulfilling life with a sense of purpose.
Similarly, in the second stage of the Hindu Life Cycle, Grihastha it places importance on completing
family and social responsibilities. These responsibilities include finding a romantic partner or
wife/husband and taking care of them. It also requires you to find your economic role within the
community. It’s implied that by building this stage, it will allow you to transcend to the next stage and
live a content life. Fundamentally, both of these theories place emphasis on building meaningful
romantic relationships, completing social duties and the positive effects it will bring.
In the four stages of the Hindu Life Cycle, the first stage which lasts from ages 0-10 years talks
about how the child is not fully formed and needs to become more educated, in matters related to
religious matters. This strong correlation is further manifested in the other stages of life mentioned

in both the theories.
Moving on to Loevinger's theory, the third stage(conscientious stage) refers
to time in which individuals try to appreciate others. This stage has strong correlation with the
last stage of the Hindu Life Cycle as in the final stage of the cycle, individuals are expected to
be holy men and women; someone who renounced the worldly life and appreciates others and
the world. Furthermore, Daniel Levinson’s theory of the Seasons of Life states that from ages
22-28, individuals enter the adult world and build one’s life structure, which they will follow for
the rest of their life. This has strong connections with the second stage in Hinduism called the
grihastha. In this stage, Hindus are marked by marriage, they try to find their economic role. In
this stage, Hindus structure their life by committing to one person in marriage( as in Hinduism
divorces are much less likely) and they find jobs to pursue.

STATION 4:
Communication Role:
Scientist
Family Member:
Father/husband - (Age 40 - 45) Midlife Transition
Theory utilized for analysis:
Levinson
Conflict:
-
The conflict is between the father/husband and mother/wife within the family model.
They are in a conflict because of some annoying habits which the husband exhibits; and
it is to help relieve stress, and to resolve issues between the two individuals.
-
The actual conflict is that the wife
desires for change
(a fundamental component of
midlife transition within Levinson’s theory) within her husbands’ habits, specifically the
fact that he doesn’t take her opinion and her comments into account. This is due to the
communication role which her husband has encompassed as a “scientist”. Additionally,
during the midlife transition relationship dynamics also undergo scrutiny since all aspects
of the lives of the respective individuals are reviewed and reevaluated; this causes the
individuals to desire change within their spouse for a better quality for their relationship.
Solution:
-
Firstly both of the individuals must begin by remaining calm and not overacting as this
will only aggregate the situation; this will be easier for the husband to achieve, since as a
scientist he will generally appear as a calmer individual and try to approach the situation
with logic and reason. Both individuals should avoid any accusations as to not further
negatively develop the situation.
-
The negotiation process must be brought forth and introduced; to begin the process one
of the individuals out of the two must acknowledge the conflict and agree to solve it. Both
individuals must bring forth their feelings and openly discuss their wants (which is in
accordance with Levinson's theory since when individuals re-evaluate their relationships,
they also analyze their needs and especially their wants; basically what they would like
to take away from the relationship). Furthermore, the next step will be to discuss the
issues and concerns which caused the conflict; which in this case will be the fact that the
husband does not take his wife’s opinion and comments seriously and thinks of himself
as superior to her. Additionally, brainstorming solutions is of the utmost importance since
it allows the two parties to think about some compromises, and trade offs which need to
be enacted to meet both of the individuals needs. Once brainstorming has been
completed the most realistic and responsible ones must be analyzed and selected,
which satisfies both parties and allows for a I win-you win situation to be realized and
brought forth into existence. This is known as a collaborative compromise. Within this
specific scenario it would be that the husband should try to mend his habits and thinking
to a certain realistic degree while his wife could try to engage in continued conversation
with the husband in an attempt to make him realize her feelings and how his views of
superiority negatively affect her.

Describe the reasons why Caitin has returned to her parents’ home.
There are several reasons for why Caitin has returned to her parents’ home. The reasons are
primarily due to her financial situation and the economic benefits for returning home. Specifically
due to her online business which requires capital and investment which could be diverted from
her living expenses to the business; and the space she requires for her sewing and jewelry
making machinery which she now has established in the basement of her parents’ house along
with her living quarters. She would have to otherwise rent a space for her equipment and
general business merchandise, in addition for a space to live for herself.
2.
How does Caitlin’s transition to adulthood reflect the current trends in Canada
The current trends in Canada are quite similar to Caitlin's personal transition to adulthood; most
young adults choose to come back home after their secondary or post secondary education.
These circumstances arise due to the high cost of living that they encounter, which entices them
to return back to their parents home due to the lower costs they have to endure; especially in
Caitlin's scenario where she needs to save capital in order to invest within her business.
Additionally, due to the higher tuition costs and current housing market, which has made buying
a house almost impossible for young people.
3.
How does Caitlin’s transition differ from the trends?
Though Caitlin’s situation is quite similar to current trends, it does differ within certain aspects.
She has experienced independence due to her previous life/job experiences and is able to
compare both life with and without parents; this has caused her some difficulty when adjusting
back with her parents home, as she is used to a lifestyle where she wasn't held accountable and
wasn’t required to answer to anyone, this in some aspect differs from trends since young
individuals sometimes never experience life with that level of independence making it easier for
them to adjust with life with their parents. Furthermore, Caitlin greatly differentiates herself when
it comes to her career as she has chosen to become an entrepreneur, which is an untraditional
path as young individuals usually opt out for traditional career paths; this financial and
economical factor is the largest reason for why she moved back to her parents home; to have a
space where she can expand her business with larger investment with her own capital while
limiting her own cost of living.
4.
Using exchange theory (see page 41), identify the costs and benefits of Caitlin’s
return home for Caitlin for her parents.
-
Positive Outcomes
Negative Outcomes
More active social life with Caitlin’s friends
coming over
More likely a hood of arguments as her
parents want to know about her
whereabouts, who she’s with, and when
she’ll return. Caitlin believes she’s an
adult thus feels entitled to go out during
night without informing her parents.
Caitlin saves more money by living with
her parents which allows her to resort
more money towards her business hence
increasing the likelihood of her business
succeeding.
They had to accommodate a place for
Caitlin to live which resulted in her
parents having to move their items
around. This is testament as her mother
had to move her sewing and jewelry items
to a room upstairs.
With her parents taking care of the house
chores and paying for many of the
utilities, her mental well being is in a much
better state. Thus she’s able to focus on
other aspects of her life which in general
leads to a more fulfilling life.
Her parents had to do more chores
around the house to accommodate her.
With the parents' age, this process
becomes much more tolling on them.
5.
How do you think Caitlin will become independent of her parents?
The path for Caitlin to become independent of her parents is simply when she secures a good
financial position. This can primarily only be achieved through her online business at the current
moment as she has invested a lot of capital within it for its success. Furthermore, once the
online business begins attracting enough clients and sales she will be able to become financially
viable enough where she can support both her cost of living and manage additional investments
for her business. I believe her business is the primary factor which will allow her to become
independent of her parents as it was the main force which drove her back to her parents
residence. When the business becomes successful and influential/substantial enough in size
she will have the ability to rent out a space for both herself and her business.
6.
As a result of living with parents for an extended period of time, what challenges
might Caitlin face when she eventually lives on her own?
Caitlin will face many challenges as she transitions from living with her family to herself. Lack of
financial independence is a problem common among adults and young adults that live on their
own. Paying for utilities, grocery, insurance etc becomes a necessity. Adults like Caitlin who fail
to master budgeting are bound to face many financial problems in the future. Furthermore, she'll
be tasked with all household chores and other responsibilities associated with maintaining a
household like laundry, cooking and cleaning. With the sudden addition of these tedious and
time consuming activities the necessity of adequate time management becomes more
important. This issue becomes more prevalent when we consider that Caitlin wants to grow her
business hence balancing these tasks can be very difficult and demanding. Moreover, as Caitlin
transitions to living independently, she’ll be forced to make pressing decisions without the aid or
guidance of her parents. Despite these draw-backs, I believe it’s important for her and adults in
similar situations to live independently as conquering these problems will allow for great
personal development and increase the likelihood of her success in life.
