1 Needs Assessment Lisa Watts MSW, Walden University SOCW- 6311: Social Work Practice Research II Dr. Hadeed December 23, 2023
2 Needs Assessment Introduction A critical component of any program is performing a needs assessment; it is an evaluation, an organized, systematic effort to assess the needs of something. (Dudley, 2020) It is completed to identify a gap in service with some clients' treatment and their ability to engage. Having a client knowledge base enabled me to identify an immediate need at my agency. This week, I completed my needs assessment at my field education, which is also my current work location, SMA Healthcare, a substance abuse, mental, and behavioral health agency. The agency's Outpatient Director will benefit from having an LGBTQIA+ group added with therapist that can support this population. I will discuss the criteria for the group and justify the proposed program. Description of the Program The needs assessment is focused on improving the services at SMA Healthcare. The agency offers various diverse programs, such as intensive mental health and substance use outpatient treatment programs, which one component consists of psychoeducational groups for those battling any mental health diagnosis. The psychoeducational groups will be provided online and in-person, which can be flexible for clients with busy schedules or transportation barriers. Recently, there has been an increase in LGBTQIA+ clients, so they are seeking to expand the program to meet their client's needs and to provide training to Therapists who lack the knowledge to support their clients. The program will allow LGBTQIA+ clients to express their thoughts and feelings and seek direction and support from the therapist who is specialty trained. As other clients face similar life situations, group therapy can help them realize they are not alone. Clients can develop strategies for navigating their feelings by sharing their internal
3 struggles. Having the support of others can help this population to realize that they are not abnormal. As part of the specialty training program and groups, clients, their families or support, and schools will give them a safe place to help them grow and accomplish their goals. It will help the therapist learn about this population's mental health issues, remove the stigmas, and provide them with knowledge on this population to provide them with the best experience during sessions. Criteria and Justification for the Program The main criteria for the program are that all the clients identify with this population, need to complete the screening for the agency, complete a comp assessment, and be enrolled in an intensive outpatient treatment program due to the clients having a history of Baker Acts or self-harm. The client's population is diverse, and they would attend psychoeducational groups twice weekly. I would have the therapist and clients complete a simple online survey to collect data critical to implementing the workshops on what needs to be addressed. I would also interview the current therapist to capture their knowledge and readiness to serve this population.
