1 Final Reflections Lisa Watts Master of Science in Social Work, Walden University SWLB-0652: Social Work Skills Lab 2 Tiffany Wells December 14, 2023
2 Final Reflections Identify at least one key learning from your Skills Lab experience. Explain the skills you showcased during the Skills Lab Intensive experience and what you considered in your response to the scenario you faced in Day 3 Session 3. One key learning from Skills Lab 2 was to demonstrate respect for everyone regardless of their identity. Be patient and actively listen to the client, and not let situations when the client challenges me "call you out." I tend to ask many questions to figure out the client's issue, but as I was told during the Skills Lab experience, the client knows what is wrong, and they have the answer; I must be patient, listen, and guide them through an intersectional lens. Some skills I showcased during the scenario I faced on Day 3, Session 3, were active listening, open-ended questions, professionalism, and cultural competence. On Day 3, Session 3, I effectively included the client by supporting them in understanding the subjective experiences of those with marginalized and stigmatized identities during the MCOD case study. The key learning was introduced, explained, and implemented into partner/group work during day three. Critical education consisted of the following: Licensure Preparation applying MCOD at Micro, Meso, and Macro Levels, Assessing Organizational Position on the Continuum in Micro, Macro, and Meso, and Potential Outcomes of MCOD in Social Work Organizations. It was developing a case presentation that included essential facts only and had to be done in 3 minutes max. How did this demonstration show you are ready to enter your field experience? We had the chance to use and implement empathy, compassion, social justice, and community within groups, as individuals, with our professors, and in the online classroom throughout our Skills Lab 2 Intensive experience. Also, we presented respect for everyone and Standards for professional behavior. We worked with partners and instructors in groups to show
3 how we complied with the NASW Code of Ethics. Other skills were also implemented during Skills Lab 2: Diversity and Inclusion, Micro Skills, Group Facilitation, Professional Demeanor, and Community. When I faced a random scenario showdown, where Dr. Wells was the client, and I was the social worker, I referred to the diagnostic assessment. I attempted to make sure I covered all the questions in the evaluation. During this, I was challenged by the client leading the questions in different directions. Also, the instructors challenged us as clients and provided us with chosen cases at random. They demanded clients challenge us on the skills learned throughout our courses and the knowledge we gathered during the first two days of Skills Lab 2. Explain how you will incorporate these learnings into your Field Education experience. The demonstration provided me with feedback on my role as a social worker. This helped me to see ways that I needed improvement in some areas. Watching others also showed me many different ways to approach different situations. To excel and succeed in my sector, I will need to take advantage of additional opportunities and complete practice exercises. I will demonstrate my practical knowledge of all relevant variables by complying with the NASW Code of Ethics, providing the following: applying a professional demeanor all the time, diversity and inclusion, facilitating groups, learning from my mistakes and failures, shadow, observing and monitoring other professionals. Learning from experience and practice tasks, I remain competent in my work and feel confident while doing it, reading, and researching. I will work with others, meet with my supervisor weekly, and get feedback to succeed in my career. Skills Lab 2 provided knowledge and allowed us to interact with our peers from all over the globe. It also was very challenging at times, but the challenges resulted in feedback and learning opportunities that are highly likely to happen in social work.
