FIELD ANALYSIS My days are different every day! While a lot of people may have a routine or schedule, I live my days as free as a bird! I wake up every day between seven and eight-thirty am. Upon waking up I perform a normal hygiene routine by washing my face, brushing my teeth, using the restroom, and showering ( my backstage ). This is what I do when no one is watching or there aren't any expectations for me. Also, this is my first gender role of the day. because every gender should be conducting their hygiene and for a woman specifically, we are supposed to keep ourselves up and appear feminine. After I have myself together, I pick out an outfit, this outfit is chosen with my activities for the day in mind. For example, If I have plans to do a lot of walking today, then my outfit will include tennis shoes for sure. I then move on to preparing breakfast before I head ou t. Once I have eaten, I get my day started with errands. This begins my socialization process for the day. Now I am out talking and interacting with people. This is where I work on my front stage because I have to appear a certain way to interact with people. For example, at home it’s just me I do not have to talk to anyone else or interact with anyone else so to appear outgoing, professional, etc., I have to present a good front stage to others. This is where social norms also come into play, because not only am I interacting with others I have to follow social norms and impression management like making eye contact, waiting in line, and making a certain impression on those whom I'm engaging with. Impression management refers to the goal-directed conscious or unconscious attempt to influence the perceptions of other people about a person, object, or event by regulating and controlling information in social interaction (Nickerson,2022). Social norms are the unwritten rules of beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that are considered acceptable in a particular social

FIELD ANALYSIS group or culture. Norms provide us with an expected idea of how to behave, and function to provide order and predictability in society (McLeod,2008). After checking out a few couches and deciding on what I wanted and when I want to purchase them, I headed by my mom's place to help her babysit the kids. This is where values, norms, status, front stage, and roles all come together. As an aunt, and elder to the children in my family it’s my role to support them in their upbringing. This is a norm in the American family structure. I work on my front stage here as well because I have to present myself in a certain way to the kids. This ties into Norms, statues, and roles within the family. By noon, I am headed to grab lunch for the kids, my mom, and me. After arriving back to them with the food, I get plates and prepare for the kids to eat. After spending hours with my mom and the kids, playing, putting them down for a nap, etc. I head back home in the evening to prepare dinner for myself, get some homework done and unwind for the night. My daily life is shaped and constrained by society because like many other people I alter parts of myself around certain people and in certain environments to fit societal norms and standards. To reflect on my observations, I would say that at home I act slightly differently than I do in public or around my nieces and nephews. This isn't because I am fake, it’s because I have to display myself in a certain fashion especially around the kids because they are like sponges and are still learning life through me and everyone around them, and I only want to show them what is right and or appropriate. With other people in general I noticed I have to appear friendly and professional and coming from a military background I noticed this was a challenge for me as well because in a military environment we do not sugar coat how we feel or what we have to say but it’s socially normal in a military setting whereas in civilian life people are sensitive and easily offended.
