1 x Missing and Exploited Children Movement Katie Luaces Grantham University SO330: Social Problems Professor Bell 15 December 2020 The social movement that I have chosen for this project is that of Missing and Exploited Children. In 1979, six-year-old, Etan Patz disappeared while on his was way to school, and to
Missing and Exploited Children Movement 2 this day has never been found. Two years later, six-year-old Adam Walsh, was abducted from a Sears department store, and two weeks later his severed head was discovered in a canal. These two incidents, “ignite a nationwide movement to find and protect missing and exploited children, culminating in the 1984 creation of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children” (U.S. Department of Justice, 2020) . This movement was initially started due the lack of resources that law enforcement provided to the victims’ families. The goal is to coordinate the efforts of law enforcement personnel, social service agency staff, elected officials, judges, prosecutors, educators, and members of the public and private sectors ( Federal Resources on Missing and Exploited Children , 2007). Eventually the movement expanded its’ efforts to assist the public with abductions, recovery, and services to combat sexual exploitation of children. According to the October 2002 National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART) “The number of missing children who were reported missing in 1999 was estimated to be 797,500 (Sedlak et al. 2002). Almost 20 years later in 2019, according to the FBI, the number of reported missing children was 424,066. I have chosen this social movement for two reasons: I have children of my own, so this topic hits close to home for me. The other reason is, I am an avid true crime junkie and took an interest in the cases of Adam Walsh and Etan Patz. I was amazed with the sheer determination and drive that the Walsh family exhibited to bring this topic to the public’s eyes. What I know already from this movement is due of the tragedy that two families ensued, so many children have been saved. This movement gained popularity rather quickly, as well as having dozens of agencies created to combat the missing and exploited children problem that we experience in America. What I do hope to learn from my research is a better understanding of
Missing and Exploited Children Movement 3 what these agencies do and how they all are intertwined together. As well as learning the history and major accomplishment that the National Center Missing and Exploited Children. From the litter research I have conducted thus far for this week’s assignment, I am already learning things that I was unaware of, so I am excited to see what new information I will uncover during this project.
