1. What might be some of the reasons for the income inequality that has led to these children living in poverty? Hint: refer to your textbook. - There are various factors contributing to the income disparity that has resulted in these children residing in impoverished conditions. These factors include wealth distribution, educational opportunities, technological advancements, the shift from manufacturing to service-oriented jobs, discriminatory practices, and even the prevalence of single-parent households. For example, lack of access to quality education plays a significant role as children often opt to leave school in order to assist their families in finding employment and meeting financial obligations. Unfortunately, their limited education hinders their chances of securing jobs, especially in an economy that is increasingly reliant on service-based industries rather than traditional manufacturing. 2. Make a guess about what effect on the economy overall we might see as a result of more children in poverty. - From my point of view, an increase in the number of children living in poverty will have detrimental effects on the economy, leading to a decline. This is primarily due to the fact that families lacking financial resources are unable to make purchases, thereby weakening the overall economy. Furthermore, governments would experience a rise in healthcare expenses and an increase in the provision of assistance to meet the community's basic needs. 3. According to the text, what options does the government have of helping those in poverty? - Based on the text, the government offers various options to assist individuals living in poverty. These options include income assistance, general assistance, social service programs, tax credits, enterprise zones, and welfare programs. Additionally, the government can provide social welfare programs such as in-kind benefits, tax credits, and public housing. Furthermore, they can offer job training and education programs and encourage employers to provide living wages.
4. Which of these options do you think is the most effective and why? - From my perspective, I believe that the most efficient programs are income assistance and social services. Income assistance not only offers direct financial aid to individuals in need, but it also extends support to those who are currently unable to secure employment. On the other hand, social services play a crucial role by implementing diverse initiatives aimed at addressing critical issues like child abuse prevention, foster care, family planning, job training, child welfare, and daycare. These programs hold immense significance, particularly in the contemporary society we inhabit today. 5. Do you think the high cost of these programs is worth the potential benefits they provide? Explain your answer. - In my viewpoint, I believe that the term "potential benefits" holds significant weight, and I am of the opinion that the considerable expenses associated with these initiatives do not justify the potential advantages they offer. To elaborate, I opine that individuals with greater financial resources should bear the responsibility of tax payments. At the same time, those who are financially disadvantaged should receive assistance through various means, including income and general support, social service programs, and workfare initiatives.
