Eve Adcock 01DEC2020 Part 2 (Due December 9, 6:00 pm) Write up: 20 points Answer the following questions 1) What motivated you to select this research article for this assignment (other than that it was required for this class!)? I chose to do my final project on Relationships between executive functions and occupational performance of children with medulloblastoma . I have watched firsthand the late effects of medulloblastoma (MB) in children. My son was 7 years old when he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma WHO grade IV. He had suffered from the late effects shown in the article. I also have children that are in the typical development (TD) portion of this study. 2) What type of research design did the authors use? Observational research design was used in this article. 3) How did the authors select their sample? Do you think that sample selection methods could have affected the results? 52 children with MB and 53 children with TD ages 6-12 years old. The participants with MB had to already be on chemotherapy and should not have received a secondary diagnosis ( autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mental retardation, etc). The tumor should not ne metastatic. The participants with TD should not have been diagnosed with ( autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mental retardation, etc). Yes, if they would have selected participants with MB that had a relapse or metastatic cancer the results
would be different. What we don’t know if the children had surgery for the medulloblastoma before they started chemotherapy, this would make a major impact on the results. 4) What type of descriptive statistics did the authors report? Your slide should include a screen shot of the table or figure. Descriptive Analyses were presented using the median and interquartile range (IRQ) for the non-normally distributed and original variables. 5) What type of inferential statistics did the authors report? SPSS software version 22 was used in performing statistical analyses. Variables were investigated using Visual histograms, probability plots. Analytical methods using Kolmogorov-Simirnov/Shapiro-Wilk test to determine if normally distributed or not. The Correlation coefficients ad their significance were calculated using the Spearman’s test. A p-value of <.05 was used to show statistically significant results. 6) What was the major conclusion from the study? The executive functions and Occupational performance levels of children with medulloblastoma were significantly lower than those with typical development were. Children with medulloblastoma had a significant relationship between executive functions and occupational performance (p<0.05, p<0.001).
7) Do the authors list any limitations? What are they? Yes, the executive functions were reported from the parent’s observation and the occupational performance we reported from the children’s point of view. There are also many different treatment options that could affect the degree of limitations in children being treated for medulloblastoma. 8) Did you notice any additional limitations/biases that the authors should have mentioned? I did not notice any additional limitations or biases. The hypothesis was that they thought there would not be a difference between executive functions of children with medulloblastoma and typical development. 9) Did the study follow any kind of ethical guidelines? Explain. They had an ethical committee approval for the study from Hacettepe University Non-Invasive Clinical Investigation Ethics Committee Approval number 18/655-18. 10) Your voice This study shows children with medulloblastoma show limitations. They did not state or make an exclusion for children who have had surgery due to their medulloblastoma. This would make a major impact on the results. We do not know if it was the chemotherapy that induced the limitations or if it was the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. If they had surgery, it would have been brain surgery. This alone would give the children limitations.
