a. Identify at least four topics covered in Theories  for Direct Social Work Practice  that you would apply in your work with the client, Sharease, considering her vulnerable and unique conditions: being gay, female, African American, and diagnosed with PTSD after being brutally assaulted while in the military. The four topics I would use when working with Sharease are Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Empathy, Cognitive Coping, and Strengths Based Perspective. b. Discuss how those four relational principles and techniques could benefit you as the social worker in working with Sharease and with the planned change process, especially in the intervention stage, taking into consideration her vulnerabilities. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT): CBT has been used by social workers for more than 30 years. “Within cognitive theory there are no assumed innate drives or motivations that propel people to act in particular ways. We all develop patterns of thinking and behavior through habit, but these patterns can be adjusted as we acquire new information,” (Walsh , 2013) By focusing on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, the negative aspects of them we can help empower clients to move towards a more healthier outlook on life while helping them work through trauma. Empathy: Being empathetic allows us to understand how and what our clients are feeling which is important if we are going to be able to help them work through any trauma they may have. It allows us to show our clients like Sharease that we are interested in what they are saying and how they are feeling. It helps build a trusting relationship between client and social worker. Cognitive Coping: “The practitioner helps the client learn and practice new or more effective ways of dealing with stress and negative moods,” (Walsh , 2013) . This technique allows clients to be able to become more effective at managing their challenges. This could help Sharease be able to manage the stress she is feeling and help process the trauma she has experienced. Strengths Based Perspective: “The strengths perspective underlies the concepts of protective influences and resilience, in that people are not only able to survive and endure but can triumph over difficult life circumstances,” (Walsh, A Social Work Perspective on Theory and Practice , 2013) By using the clients strengths it will empower them to help change their way of thinking. c. How would you, as the social worker, ensure that Sharease’s human rights were positively impacted? If I were Sharease’s social worker, I would hope that using the above techniques would help empower Sharease and help her see things in a different perspective. I understand that Sharease does not want participant in services but by using the above techniques, it would allow Sharease to become more open to help and guidance to help her overcome her trauma.
