ASSESSMENT ROLE PLAY AND REFLECTION PAPER 2 During the assessment part of the role play, my partner and I took would have taken turns being the client and the social worker. We would have done assessments based on the scenario we chose which was about a 20-year-old male, James, whose boyfriend of 2 years had recently walked away from the relationship. James appeared depressed and did not want to leave his house, however a few of his friends convinced him to go out with them to a club. Once at the club, James had some drinks and got into a fight and was arrested. After being arrested, he was court ordered counseling for anger management. This week, my partner and I would have focused on the assessment part of working with a client, however we were unable to do so due to my partner being sick. However, the assessments I planned to use during this part of the changed planned process was an assessment for anger and depression. I felt the anger assessment would have lead us to understand how often my client feels angry and would have been a good baseline to get at the beginning since he was court ordered for anger management. The depression assessment I felt would be a good assessment to use since my client is probably dealing with some sort of depression since his boyfriend of 2 years walked away from the relationship, which lead to my client going out with friends and getting into a fight. I feel both assessments would be useful for a baseline of understanding what it is exactly my client is feeling and how I as the social worker could help my client overcome the challenges he is facing. When it came to building a treatment plan with my client, I was unable to assess this part. However, if I were able to start building a treatment plan with my client, I would have asked them what their overall goal of treatment was and what they wanted to get out of it. I think having an overall goal of treatment can help a client really dive into treatment. Even if the client is involuntary or unwilling to participate, sometimes having an end goal helps because they

For example, a goal for this particular client could be to increase understanding of their angry feelings, or addressing issues underlying angry feelings, or to correct irrational thinking which leads to anger, lastly to decrease overall intensity and frequency of angry feelings. These are all good goals for this client to have because they will gain the knowledge of where their anger is coming from and how to better manage it. The current technology that is being used with this client is all their progress notes is kept electronically and communication is via telephone. Keeping progress notes electronically is a better alternative than filing away because you are able to access the progress notes for the client quicker. I do not think that any changes need to be made with the way that technology is being used with this particular client. However, I would like to add that zoom session would be made available to this client if they are unable to come in person. If the client was to utilize the zoom sessions, the social worker will ensure that they are in a private location where nobody else is and that if they are recording the session, that they have the clients permission before doing so. Using supervision with any client is very vital. Supervision allows you to discuss your cases with your supervisor and get advice and/or help with navigating certain aspects of therapy with a client. For this client, I could discuss with my supervisor about the assessments that the client completed to determine what the best course of treatment would be to help this client reach their goals. If I were a new social worker, I would utilize supervision to ensure that what I am doing with a client is the right steps. I would discuss the case and then discuss what my plan of action is so that I could get advice from my supervisor on how to manage the case and work with a client who is involuntary.
