a. What could have been done or said differently? The most significant thing that should have been done is Jennifer speaking up. I understand she wanted the internship to go well for Scott but things were not going well at all, in fact it was a disaster. One thing Jennifer could have done with Scott is to discuss his learning contract and find out exactly what it was he was wanting to gain out of the internship instead of revising his learning contract herself. b. Whose responsibility was it in this situation to ensure that the social work student was considered and chosen through a better process? Why? I think before any paperwork was done, Jennifer and Lamina should have interviewed Scott for the position. I know Rene had talked to him and her and Scott got along and had great plans for the summer program but a formal interview should have been done to understand what exactly Scott would get out of the internship. When it came to the final decision on whether Scott would be accepted as an intern, I feel that should have been Lamina’s responsibility. She should have ensured all the paperwork was done correctly before Scott started and ensured that Scott knew his role at the agency. c. What were the student’s (Scott) responsibilities in this scenario? Why? One of Scott’s responsibilities was to ensure that he was meeting with Jennifer for his supervision, which he was not. His other responsibility was his learning contract and to ensure that he was sticking to what was on his learning contract. It was also Scotts responsibility to be professional which he was not. He showed up to his interview in flip flops, shorts with holes, an t-shirt that was not ironed, and had an “I do not care” attitude. He also should have spoken with Jennifer when there was a problem with Rene instead of writing it in the volunteer journal. d. As a social work student in a field placement, how would you envision interacting with a busy director who, perhaps, seemed weighed down by her or his job? I would envision my interaction with my busy supervisor to be quick but informal. Also if I had any questions or concerns but was unable to talk to my supervisor in person, I would send a formal email to them so I had in writing an answer for my question. I would also try to schedule a meeting with my supervisor every week to discuss the weeks task and ensure that I had a plan for the week so that I would not be a bother through the week asking what needs to be done. e. How could Jennifer have gotten better supervision? Jennifer could have gotten better supervision from Lamina by coming to her with direct questions and a plan. She could have asked Lamina for guidance on what to do with the situation that arose with Scott. When it came down to the paperwork for Scott, Jennifer could have sent an email to Lamina that had detailed questions and instructions on how to ensure the paperwork was done correctly.
f. What are the professional competence or other ethical issues involved in this scenario, if any? Discuss how you might address them and why. One ethical issue that arose in this scenario was Scott discussing his personal life and his disappointment with his inability to complete his internship at his place of work. I would address this issue by meeting with Scott and reassuring him that you understand he is going through a difficult time in his personal life but remind him that he is to put that aside when he is at his internship and that he is to be professional and to do his best when working with clients.
