EMM 400 TOPIC 1 DQ 1 Hello, Class and Professor, First, terrorism is defined as one using violent force or intimidation against people to promote corruption, achieve a political or religious purpose, or even illustrate a point. However, when it comes to international terrorism, the FBI defines it as acts that occur outside the US and transcend national boundaries ( Terrorism 2002/2005 2010). In terms of how they are accomplished, the person they appear to coerce or intimidate, or the location where their perpetrators operate or seek asylum. In conclusion, relating to international terrorism, this is an act of violence that has a heavy emphasis on just how dangerous of an act this can be when performed and how it affects human life significantly around the world. Meanwhile, domestic terrorism is defined as when violent and criminal acts are committed by individuals/groups that further reach their ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature ( Terrorism 2002/2005 2010). Domestic terrorism is also an unlawful use of force that threatens or is violent by an individual or group of individuals who reside within the United States and even Puerto Rico (Taylor, R. W., & Swanson, C. R. (2019). Defining individuals who strike because of shared ideals was more difficult since I kept drawing parallels between foreign and domestic terrorism. However, terrorist ideologies motivate individuals or groups to carry out terrorist attacks, believing that their actions are justified. Therefore, when it comes to individuals who attack due to shared ideologies, the first thing that comes to mind is school shootings because, in my last class, we discussed this topic a little bit but briefly. While in this class, the Columbine School Shooting Incident came into mind becasue Eris Harris and Dylan Klebold shared each other's beliefs/ideologies about past terror acts that were lame or not good enough in their eyes and sought to devise a plan that they thought could ensue further violence within their area of operations. Both students followed the plan they constructed and did a massive amount of damage to the community and caused harm and death to so many faculty and students. After this incident was televised, many people wanted to recreate this exact scenario, which caused it to be called the "Columbine effect" ( A brief history of Columbine and its effect ). From 1999 to 2024, many incidents like this have been recorded, and the violators who were apprehended spoke
about why they did what they did, in which they mentioned how the Columbine Shootings were their motive and believed that Eris and Dylan were doing the right thing. Maybe I am wrong in using this kind of example for how individuals attack with shared ideologies. Still, the only other example I could think of is something along the lines of an individual who attacks a church and wants to commit a mass shooting because they may hold a different belief, whether it's religious or not, to do such a thing. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am open to hearing you all give me examples of what "individuals who attack due to shared ideologies" would look like.
