EMM 400 TOPIC 1 DQ 2 Hello, Class and Professor, Based on the readings and some research that have been conducted within this class and following classes, I believe that the United States is not winning the fight against domestic terrorism. The Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies are doing all they possibly can to defend and secure the country from this type of terrorism, especially international. First, when it comes to mass shootings in areas involving schools or public gatherings, there is this persona that is normal here in the US. When every town began tracking mass shootings after the Sandy Hook Elementary School killings, there was no standard definition of a mass shooting (Archie, 2022). Therefore, questions about gun control because of gun violence and how mass shootings dominate media coverage and public interest, at the end of this all, present a small minority of shooting incidents. Simply because there is no true definition of what a mass shooting is and the numbers that represent it/define it for people to understand. Thus, we become numb to these incidents being recorded and published for us to follow that we see it as usual and don't put so much emphasis on how we can prevent it or deviate from it; instead, it seems we don't do enough to keep it from reoccurring. Moss massacres that are reported do not come off as domestic or international becasue anymore either the shooter is killed, took his life, or later found out that there was no motive behind their actions. Secondly, another reason why I believe the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies are losing the fight against domestic terrorism is due to the lack of funding, resources, and personnel. For example, the Department of Homeland Security recently announced Wednesday (February 14th, 2024) that it is preparing to remove some employees from their regular duties and reprogram funds to address the budget deficit and that their inaction threatens national security (Katz, 2024). The Biden administration warned lawmakers that it could cause damage to national security and leaves people to ask what we consider the winning sense, stopping ten attacks and only allowing four? Thus, I would say, and many more would say, that it should be a zero to determine it as a win, but like I said so, people might view it differently. Lately, it seems anymore that there have been many unanticipated violent attacks that fell silent all because I feel we lack personnel and even funding to cover every area.
When it comes to international terrorism, I used to believe that we were making great efforts to prevent or deter it. However, that opinion changed drastically after I saw the Afghanistan pull out while serving in the military. Most people will say that it was never our fight, to begin with, or that we have done everything possible for that country and our business/services were not needed any further. However, I do not see it that way because most people do not know the fine details. For example, look how quickly Afghanistan fell after the US withdrew from the country and how the counterparts we supposedly trained and equipped fled and abandoned their posts. Meanwhile, when US troops were rapidly deploying and bringing the fight to the enemy every year, it seemed as if the situation was under some control and that the country of Afghanistan was in a neutral bubble ( 1 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, this document outlines ... ). When it comes to terror groups like ISIS or Al-Qaeda, I believe that we were neutralizing the threat of these groups and trying our best to locate, direct attacks, coordinate resources, and distribute information regarding them. Still, now I feel as if we are slipping away and getting back to square one. Not only are they causing issues outside the US borders, but there have been incidents of people becoming followers of these terror groups more easily. These people are American citizens on US soil who are converting to these terror groups and believing in their ideologies, thus willing to turn against their own country and cause violent acts and crimes (ex., 9/11, Boston Marathon Bombing, etc.) References: 1 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan this document outlines ...
